If you have ever gotten a PPF quote from a dealership, you have probably noticed the price is significantly higher than what independent shops charge. This is usually not because the dealership uses better film or better installers. Here is what is actually happening behind the scenes.
How the Dealership Model Works
Most dealerships do not install PPF themselves. They subcontract the work to the same independent shops you could go to directly. The dealership then adds a markup - often 40 to 100 percent - for acting as the middleman. A $5,000 dealership PPF job might cost $2,500 to $3,000 at the shop that actually does the work.
- The dealership sales team earns a commission on PPF add-ons.
- The finance and insurance (F&I) department bundles it into your loan, making the real cost harder to see.
- The film brand, coverage area, and installer are often chosen by the dealership based on their margin, not your needs.
- Warranty claims route through the dealership, adding an unnecessary layer between you and the installer.
When the Dealership Route Makes Sense
In fairness, there are scenarios where buying through the dealership is reasonable. If you want PPF installed before you take delivery so the car is never driven unprotected, some dealerships coordinate this well. If you want to roll the cost into your financing, that is simpler through the dealer. And if you genuinely do not want to research installers, the convenience has value.
Ask the dealership who actually installs the film. Then call that shop directly and get a quote. You will usually see the markup immediately. In many cases you can schedule installation for the day after you take delivery and save $1,000 to $3,000.
What to Watch for at Dealerships
- A PPF package with vague coverage descriptions. Ask exactly which panels are covered.
- Bundling PPF with other add-ons (nitrogen tire fill, fabric protection, VIN etching) to obscure the individual pricing.
- Claims that aftermarket PPF will void your paint warranty. It will not. This is a common pressure tactic.
- Using lesser-known film brands to increase margin. Ask for the brand name and look it up.
