XPEL vs. SunTek vs. LLumar: An Honest Film Comparison

Walk into ten shops and ask which PPF brand is best, and you will often get ten answers - usually whichever brand that shop happens to carry. We are not a shop, so we do not have a horse in this race. We compared the three films most owners weigh against each other using published spec sheets, warranty documents, and feedback from installers who work with all of them - not the marketing brochures.

XPEL Ultimate Plus

XPEL built its reputation on being first to market with a pattern-cut database (DAP) and a strong dealer network. Ultimate Plus is their flagship product and the one most consumers hear about first.

  • Self-healing speed: Fast. Light swirls disappear within minutes in direct sun or with warm water.
  • Optical clarity: Excellent. Virtually invisible on white and silver vehicles. On dark colors, a faint orange-peel texture can appear depending on the body panel.
  • Warranty: 10 years, transferable. Covers yellowing, cracking, peeling, and staining.
  • Thickness: 8.0 mil total (6.0 mil film plus 2.0 mil adhesive and top coat).

SunTek Ultra

SunTek is owned by Eastman Chemical, one of the largest specialty materials companies in the world. Their Ultra line is the direct competitor to XPEL Ultimate Plus.

  • Self-healing speed: Comparable to XPEL. Installer reports give it a slight edge in cold-weather healing.
  • Optical clarity: Very good. Marginally less orange peel than XPEL on dark vehicles, though the difference is subtle.
  • Warranty: 10 years, with a newer performance guarantee that covers discoloration and delamination.
  • Thickness: 8.0 mil total. Nearly identical layup to XPEL.

LLumar (Valor Series)

LLumar is also under the Eastman umbrella. Their Valor line is the premium tier, positioned against XPEL and SunTek Ultra.

  • Self-healing speed: Good, but reported as slightly slower than XPEL and SunTek Ultra in side-by-side comparisons.
  • Optical clarity: Very good. Clean, glossy finish.
  • Warranty: 10 years. Coverage is similar to XPEL.
  • Thickness: 8.0 mil total.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Honestly, the differences between these three films are smaller than the difference between a great installer and an average one. All three will protect your paint from rock chips, scratches, and UV damage for a decade. All three self-heal. All three carry strong warranties.

The installer matters more than the brand. A perfectly installed SunTek job will outperform a poorly installed XPEL job every single time. Focus on finding a certified, experienced shop first, then discuss which film they recommend for your specific vehicle and driving conditions.

That said, if you are comparing quotes between shops that all do excellent work, here is the shorthand: XPEL has the strongest brand recognition and resale perception. SunTek Ultra has a slight reported edge in cold-climate healing. LLumar Valor is often available at a slightly lower price point with comparable performance.
