How to Evaluate a PPF Installer (Before You Hand Over $5,000)
Not all installers are equal. The specific questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and the credentials that actually matter when choosing a shop.
Paint protection film is one of those services where the quality of the installer matters more than the quality of the product. A skilled installer with mid-tier film will produce a better result than a novice with premium film. Here is how to tell the difference before you commit.
Credentials That Actually Matter
- Factory certification from the film brand they install (XPEL, SunTek, LLumar, and so on). This means they have completed hands-on training and are authorized by the manufacturer.
- Years of dedicated PPF experience - not general automotive experience, specifically film installation. Ask how many vehicles they wrap per month.
- A climate-controlled installation bay. PPF installation is extremely sensitive to dust and temperature. A garage with an open door is a red flag.
- Willingness to show you their work in person, not just curated photos.
Questions to Ask
- Can I see the installation area? A professional shop will have a clean, enclosed, well-lit bay.
- Do you use bulk film or pre-cut patterns? Bulk requires more skill but can produce cleaner edges. Pre-cut (DAP) is faster and more consistent. Both are valid, but the installer should explain their preference.
- What is your warranty, and what does it cover? The film manufacturer warranty and the shop warranty are separate. Make sure you understand both.
- How do you handle edges? Ask whether they wrap edges or tuck them. Wrapping is more durable but harder to execute.
- What happens if there is a defect? A reputable shop will re-do panels at no charge within their warranty period.
Red Flags
- No portfolio, or unwillingness to show recent work.
- Pricing far below market rate. Quality PPF film alone costs $30 to $50-plus per linear foot. If the total price seems too good to be true, they may be using inferior film or cutting corners.
- Pressure to add services you did not ask about.
- No written warranty, or vague warranty terms.
- Installation in an open-air environment.
Visit the shop in person before booking. The cleanliness of the shop, the professionalism of the staff, and the quality of the vehicles currently being worked on will tell you more than any website.
